The role of MABS
The Money Advice and Budgeting Service’s role is to provide free, independent and non-judgemental advice and help to people who have a debt or money management problem.
Money Advice
The service evaluates the client’s debt problem and helps the client to decide the best way to deal with it. The service assists the client in making a monthly budget and ensures that the client is receiving all necessary social welfare entitlements. MABs can identify sources of credit that match the needs of the client and facilitate the client to access these sources. For clients with serious debt problems, MABS may contact creditors on behalf of the client to make offers of payment.
Advocacy
MABS work does not end with information and budgeting advice. It seeks to tackle poverty and promote social inclusion. The service facilitates low income families to develop the knowledge and skills they need to avoid getting in to debt and how to deal with a debt situation if one arises.
MABs also use the client information relating to poverty and low income that they gather to highlight the policy changes that need to be implemented at local and national level to eliminate poverty and over-indebtedness
